Subway – Our Go To Sandwich Restaurant

Without any doubt, if you are trying to avoid meat, then sandwich restaurants, or sandwich bars (whatever we call them) are the best way to go when dining out.  They are sure to have meatless options and one of our “go to” sandwhich restaurants is Subway.

The Wandering Boots_Vegetarian Subway 03

About the Restaurant

I don’t know if this is a strategy but Subway manages to find the smallest nooks in malls and decide to build their restaurant there and have nothing but a few sets of tables and chairs.  The area where you get to line up for your turn and see your sandwiches assembled is really too small and gets cramped up when 2 or 3 customers line up and order at the same time.  Honestly, during that bit of the processed (the ordering), unless you have the store to yourself, is not comfortable.  During the rush service (breakfast, lunch, and dinner hours), sandwiches will be sitting on the chopping board while you wait for your turn to pay at the counter.  Assembly is pretty fast but when one customer order for 2 or more subs, then it creates a bottle neck in assembly and the cashier.  Other Subway branches have tables outside the restaurant, but still not enough to seat most people who come to buy during service hours.  I guess it’s ok since you can really eat the subs while standing up, walking around, or even just take them back to the office, or wherever.  We like to dine in, but if we don’t have a choice, we take our subs to the food court.  :)  Plus side to all the Subway branches we’ve visited so far, they’re all clean.

About their Menu

We’ve always been fans of subway and with fast food prices going higher, Subway’s P99 subs are looking like cheap deals.  Every once in a while they also have P69 promo (6 inches) and this month’s promo is Ham.  Yep, so no use for vegetarians, but very cheap for those who want to eat subs made with freshly baked bread and crisp fresh veggies.

The Wandering Boots_Vegetarian Subway Promo Ham
Image Taken from Subway’s Website (subway.com.ph)

By the way, I asked if I can order the promo Ham (for PHP 69) and then just request to not have any ham on my sub and just have veggies, instead of ordering Veggie Delite for PHP 99, they said no.  Because those are two different subs, and that’s why they have Veggie Delite as an option.  Tsk… I’ll try again next time.

Their subs are divided into 3 price ranges (6 inches) — the P99s, the P120s, the P150s.

The 99s are:

Spicy Italian

Ham (currently sells for P69 – promo)

Sliced Chicken

B.L.T. (Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato)

Veggie Delite (yep, that’s how they spell it)

The 120s are:

Chicken Teriyaki

Tuna

Italian B.M.T. (What BMT stands for or what it could stand for is explained here)

Sliced Chicken and Ham

Roasted Chicken

The 150s are:

Steak and Cheese

Roast Beef

Subway Club

Subway Melt

Meatball Marinara

The Wandering Boots_Vegetarian Subway 10

The Wandering Boots_Vegetarian Subway 09

If you want to make them 12 inches (foot long), you just have to pay an additional of 95PHP instead of the full price of another 6″ sub.  I think that’s a sweet deal.  So if you’re ordering for 2 people and you are getting the same sub, just order a foot long, and request to have them cut the sub in half.  They’ll wrap them separately, and you can choose different sauces for each 6″.

Our Order

Before anything else, you’ll have to choose from 4 bread options (Honey Oat, Italian, Parmesan Oregano, and Wheat).  We always order Honey Oat but incase they run out of it (or if it isn’t ready yet), the rest are ok.  Honey Oat bread has a crunchy sweat exterior, coated by oats and honey (of course), and a soft interior.  We, always order Veggie Delite footlong (so that’s 99PHP + 95 = 204PHP) and just ask them to cut the sub in half.  Most of the times, if you order Veggie Delite, they’ll ask you if you want cheese in your sub or not.  This is incase you are Vegan.  We like cheese in ours, then we request to have the sub toasted before they add the veggies.  They’ll then ask you if you want all the veggies in.  We want all veggies, and request them to be generous with pickles and bell peppers.  Our sauce of choice is Sweet Onion, but sometimes I switch it up to Chipotle Southwest (spicy) or a combination of Oil and Red Wine Vinegar.

Veggie Delite tastes yummy!  A big factor is the that the bread is freshly baked, the bread’s crust is crunchy, and the veggies are fresh and crisp.  You hear and feel the crunch in your mouth and have a full load of all the ingredients in each bite since they make sure to spread the veggies evenly.

We order 2 12″ subs and have them both sliced into 6″ subs and then have the 2 subs to go (take out) on separate bags.  For Mario and for me, our lunch.  It’s hard to come by vegetarian meals under 100PHP.  Scrap that!  It’s hard to come by vegetarian meals when we’re dining out, and Subway branches are few, so we stock up for lunch and dinner even.  ^_^

Overall

We’ve always enjoyed going to Subway and we tend to overlook the long line during certain times, and the lack of tables and chairs.  I find that the price has become much more affordable and don’t remember that they have changed price the past few years.  I just wish there are a lot more Subway branches.

Ordering Tips:

1. You can request to go easy on certain veggies, and be generous with some.  Take note that if you listen to other people’s orders, they request to leave out certain veggies (that you like) and even to leave out cheese!  So don’t be shy, the veggies you are adding to your sub, are veggies other people opted not to have.  Subway isn’t losing money on that.

2. You can have more than 1 sauce to your sub.  Mix and match and see which ones you like.  You don’t have to just choose one.  I haven’t tried 3 sauces but I don’t know how 3 would taste.  ^_^; I’m curious but not that curious.  Let me know if you tried mixing 3.

3. Go to their branch outside the service rush hours (12-1PM, 6-7PM), otherwise, make sure you pack extra patience in your bag.

Pia y Damaso – Rizal’s Literary Characters – Foodie-lized

Like This!

It’s time for some interesting sounding desserts that takes me back to the novel I was required to read in school and eventually come to love, Noli Me Tangere.

The QD Delivery Experience

I used their SMS ordering system and sent the details of my order to 09182121212.  Someone from QD called me up in 5-10 minutes after I sent the message.  Because my SMS was detailed, she only needed to confirm my order, delivery address, and give me the ETA.  For orders that are outside the city where the restaurant is, it’s usually 60-90minutes and I was alright with that.  I ordered around 5:15pm and it arrived at 6:30pm, and it came all the way from Greenhills!  Not bad!  Bravo!

The Pia y Damaso Experience

There is an extensive choice of salads, starters, seafood dishes, beef and game, pork, and dessert!  It’s easy to get lost but it’s not really overwhelming.  The descriptions are all so detailed and it’s tempting to order just everything if given the chance.  Their menu is mixed Spanish and Filipino, the classics we love, given a new interesting twist, and some really new ones (at least for me they’re new).

What We Ordered

Clam Chowder P180 The Wandering Boots Rating 4 SMALL (bacon, celery, baby clams, potato noodles and milk)

I love clam chowder (I love anything chowder for that matter)!  It was creamy (as all chowders should be, otherwise it will be called soup – correct me if I’m wrong).  I preferred eating it with rice though (did I just weirded you out with that?).  ^_^

Chicken Pastel P290 The Wandering Boots Rating 4 SMALL (baked chicken breast, chorizo, bacon, potatoes, carrots & peas with a flaky crisco crust)

I never had Chicken Pastel with a sort-of pie crust but I’m not complaining!  This one, I admit, may not be priced right especially with the serving size it came in.  That said, the chicken was FLAVORFUL (yes, it’s necessary to capitalize every letter).  The chicken meat tasted like it’s been marinating in its sauce for years!  I simply do not know how they cook these to perfection but that’s also probably one of the reasons they’re confident they have the pricing right.

Camarron Cocido P380 The Wandering Boots Rating 5 SMALL  (seared prawns and seafood thermidor with scallop, fish, mussels, squid, potato and gratineed cheese sourdough crumbs)

A little pricey, for just 2 prawns… but it’s not just prawns!  It’s scallop, fish, mussels, squid, and yes, potato and cheese sourdough crumbs, plus excellent cooking skills!  The seafood thermidor (usually cooked with lobster meat), has a subtle yet unmistakably prawn taste although the texture gives away its other seafood ingredients.  It’s creamy, the prawns were cooked excellently, they remained moist and sweet.

Brazo ni Dona Vicki P100 The Wandering Boots Rating 4 SMALL (Chewy meringue roulade with fresh butter curd)

This is a treat for Mario and he’s really a self proclaimed expert on Brazo desserts (one of his favorite desserts).  Mario commented that he has tasted sweeter versions than this one (FYI, he likes everything sweet – even adobo), but for me, I think that it’s just the perfect sweetness.  The meringue embraced the whole roll of white marshmallow-like goodness and the perfect texture and taste for the curd filling.  It was exquisite!  Oh, by the way, almost all desserts on the menu have been playfully named after characters in Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere.  Dona Vicki, incase you’ve forgotten, is actually Dona Victorina “de de Espadana”, the pretentious Filipina who prefers to be associated with the Spanish people and would always wear heavy make-up.  I would imagine that the meringue is like her really thick make-up that cakes and cracks all over her face because of how thick it is.  ^_^;

Overall
I enjoyed everything we tasted but would love if the serving size just upgrades even by a little bit.  Then again, the hardwork, precision, and cooking skills they put in each of these dishes are reflected on how flavorful each one turned out.  I would love to try their other dessert dishes – the Guni-Guni, Ibarra’s Kiss, Sisa’s Dementia, etc.  ^_^  I think this will help kids love reading the novel too, as they understand and remember the classic characters more with every sweet bite.

Zing Juice – Think Green? Drink Green!

It was so long since the last time we went “malling” at Glorietta.  Mall of Asia is so nearby that we never had the need to travel far to Makati for our window shopping urges.  It’s because of some wedding shopping errand that we found ourselves driving to Makati and walking towards the escalator of the Glorietta basement parking.

Many things have stayed the same and there were also some changes in Glorietta.  I welcome the changes since the old Glorietta has become boring to us.  There were new shops, renovations left and right and new buildings.  One of the new shops (new to us at least but we don’t know how long it has been there) is Zing Juice.  One of the many juice bars who promise healthy drinks.  The thing that intrigued us was the big poster on Wheatgrass juice (or shot).  I’ve seen these grassy thingies being sold in tradeshows or conventions but was never interested on what these were and what they are for.

This is how the bar looks like. There's just a small window where you can place your orders and can also watch while the wheatgrass juice is being extracted.

About the Wheatgrass

Taking it from the poster, it’s got a lot more Calcium than your average milk, more Carotene than Spinach, a load more Vitamin C and B and Chlorophyll??  Anyway, that’s just 1 shot (1oz) of the drink.

Yes, something green that ain't naughty... ^_^ it's healthy! Yep! We get it already!

About the Price and the Taste

We didn’t dare do the shot so we just bought the drink which will help satisfy our thirst as well.  The drink (small size) costs 115php if I remember it correctly, while the shot costs 85php.  The juice drink version is combined with pineapple (not available at that time so they used greenapple instead), the wheatgrass and another ingredient that I forgot about.  By the way, wheatgrass juice or shots aren’t the only ones they have on their shop.  Like the rest of the healthy juice bars out there, they have fruit shakes/juices and another of the less popular flavors, Ginger.

You can see the actual wheatgrass and the machine they use to extract or squeez out the healthy juices from the greenies.

Mario didn’t like it at all.  He never was a fruit guy and always wanted everything sweet, the wheatgrass drink wasn’t.  It was, Zingy! to be honest.  The hints of greenapple is there, and the weird grassy taste (how did I know what grass taste like!?).  I drank it all up because it was ok to me and also because I was thinking, “this is healthy!”.

Foamy green drink is the wheatgrass plus green apple plus something else.

Overall

I’d like to try the shot next time but to everyone else, here’s a little reminder on how much is enough for this healthy drink:

Usage (from Wiki)

The average dosage taken by consumers of wheatgrass is 3.5 grams (powder or tablets). Some also have a fresh-squeezed 30 ml shot once daily or for more therapeutic benefits a higher dose up to 2–4 oz taken 1-3 times per day on an empty stomach and before meals. For detoxification, some users may increase their intake to 3–4 times per day. It should be noted that consumers with a poor diet may experience nausea on high dosages of wheatgrass.

Le Gourmet – Former Yum Yum Tree!

Mario insisted we stop over this restaurant when we were at Makati doing some wedding stuff hunting.  Le Gourmet, which was formerly known Yum Yum Tree!, is located inside Rustan’s grocery (right at the entrance).  If you’re coming inside, it’s on the left side.

Here's a view of the entrance from inside the restaurant. Right across the street outside is the new Glorietta 5.

About the Shop

Mario said he used to dine a lot in this restaurant back when it was still called Yum Yum Tree! (YYT).  He actually forgot what it was called before so we asked one of the servers.  The shop is properly lit yet still relaxing to the eyes.  The ambiance was great despite being at the entrance of a busy grocery and we were there on a Sunday, so you could just imagine people buzzing in and out.

There’s enough space to move around and while waiting for your order (or after you eat).  Should you deside to buy some sausage links, cheese or any spice for your home cooked meals, you can look around and shop.

Sausage links here and other meat products... I haven't had a chance to walk around to see what they're selling from upclose. I'll update this post once I do have more pictures on our next dining experience.

About the Food

Upon receiving the menu, he immediately looked for the prices of the dishes as he continued to brag about how inexpensive they were but very tasty while we were window shopping at Glorietta 5.  When he found the Pinoy meals section, he said their prices haven’t changed.  He pointed to dishes that cost 150php on the average.  I think those were ok as long as the serving size is good for 2 people.

He ordered Lumpiang Shanghai + plain rice and I ordered Sinigang na Baboy which already comes with free rice.  For drinks, we had Peach Iced Tea since we wanted to compare how their Peach Ice Tea tasted against Tokyo Cafe’s.

This is the Lumpiang Shanghai and it was really good! You know that most of the times people would complain that some lumpia's are all wrapper and no meat? Well, this one's the opposite! ^_^

Sinigang!!! One of my favorite dishes! I loved how salty it was! It was just right for me and I didn't need to add fish sauce (patis). A lot of people (like Mario) probably wouldn't like it because, admittedly, it was a little too salty for restaurant standards, but I loved it! Maybe they had a little accident in the Kitchen resulting to a salty batch? Who cares! ^_^

The serving size was good.  Both Sinigang and Lumpia were enough to feed 2 people without the bloated feeling (for us, at least).  ^_^  Knowing our tummies could probably hold more food than the average human being sometimes, so the serving, for others, would probably be too big.  For us, it was enough that we satisfied our hunger but didn’t feel over-stuffed.

I was happy Mario insisted we have dinner here and I would want to go back again to try their cheese platter!!!  YUMMY!

The Filling Station – Gas up? Food up!

I’m a “forever-night-shift” kind of person working in Paranaque.  It’s always a challenge when there are days that I would like to have a special breakfast before going home.  As much as possible, I’d like not to have to travel for good food when I’m hardly awake, but Anton’s review on this place made me think twice… “for every rule, there is an exception…”

Mario picks me up from work (coming from Marikina) every morning so I asked him if it’ll be alright if we have breakfast in Makati.  “Ok!”, came the swift response!

About the Shop

The place isn’t hard to find if you look for the Royal Bellagio Hotel at P. Burgos St. in Makati.  Here’s the map from the Royal Bellagio Website.

If you’re going there with your car, you can’t park your car in front of the shop.  There simply is no place for it there.  The Royal Bellagio Hotel offers valet for free and the guard can just bring your valet slip up to you in the Filling Station once it’s ready.  We had a problem with this…  When it was time to go, the car arrived smelling like poop.  The valet man must have stepped on something not nice…

They have a narrow staircase leading to the cafe 2nd floor and you’ll occasionally have to move sideways if someone has to pass.  Well, at least I have to give way (gotta lose some weight). ^_^ But I don’t mind, there are so many interesting pictures that made us stop before actually going inside the store.

“The Filling Station” might make it sound like a gasoline station and it’s somehow true.  You can find gasoline pumps just about anywhere inside the cafe.  It also has a 60s kind of feel to it with all of the old records, old news papers, old movie posters, etc displayed on the walls and ceiling.  What really caught my interest were the statues of Batman, Wonderwoman, Elvis, Superman, Flash, a bust of Hulk and Spidey (on the ceiling).  We had a grand time taking pictures with them.

About the Food

There’s nothing to rave abou the food except that the serving was big enough for 2 (or to take home).  Mario ordered Frozen Brazzo for dessert (which was almost forgotten since we asked this to be served after the rice meals).  Nothing special.

My order
My order was Bake Chorizo with Egg (I think...). It was ok. The taste of the tomato sauce overpowered the rest of the ingredients.
Mario's order was Shanghai Rolls and additional rice. There were a lot these big rolls. We couldn't finish them so he had to take some home. Tastes ok, normal.

About the SHAKE!

Now, this is what I’m talking about!  A shake that’s made my imagination a reality!  So thick, so ice-creamy, so delicious!!!  We could have just ordered these and nothing else because they really take up a lot of space in the tummy.  They also serve the rest of the shake in the batch that couldn’t fit in the glass.  I can’t remember how much we paid for this piece of heaven but I think it was a little on the pricey side.  I’ll definitely go back to check on the price.. ^_^ and have another serving…
